Informations supplémentaires:
This small sculpture created by the artist Robert Truscott was exhibited in Winchester Cathedral to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death and burial at Winchester in 2017. She died in the early hours of 18th July 1817 aged 41 and was buried in the cathedral on the morning of the 24th July. During the 200th anniversary commemorations, the effigy stood near her grave in the north aisle of the nave. It depicted Jane at work at the little table which can be seen at her cottage at Chawton. A little bit of artistic licence has been used - firstly because it's not known for certain what she looked like. Additionally, from her late twenties, Jane habitually wore a lace cap. The cap was the badge of a married woman but was also worn by older spinsters who no longer wished to be considered as being in the marriage market. It had the added benefit of saving Jane the trouble of dressing her curly hair. In her later life, she also used reading glasses (which are kept by the British Library near King's Cross)
