The Marian sanctuary of Crea occupies a large part of the Sacred Mount of Crea, a hill in the Crea Natural Park, established in 1980, with a woods of ash, oak, turkey oaks, lilies, beeches pines and violets and primroses flowers. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003. In addition to the main church houses the 5 hermitages and 23 chapels of the devotional path that winds through the woods from the sanctuary up to the top of the hill, guest houses, bars and restaurants. On summit of the hill is located the Chapel of Paradise. The mosaic in the center of the facade is the work of the artist Piero Dalle Ceste was created in 1953 and depicts the assumption of Mary. It adorns the façade of the sanctuary of Crea, located on the sacred mountain of Crea in Monferrato, province of Alessandria, region of Piedmont (Italy). The history of this sanctuary is very ancient. It began in the Middle Ages with the construction of the church of Santa Maria, already a place of pilgrimage. According to the legend St. Eusebius, bishop of the diocese of Vercelli, in the year 350 A.D. brought a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child and had an oratory built there. Around the year 1000 Crea was already a remarkable place of Christian religious worship. The current main church of the sanctuary, dedicated to Maria Assunta, is of Romanesque origin. It was ruled by the Canons of Vezzolano until 1468, then by the Lateranensi until 1798, by the Serviti until 1801, from 1820 until 1992 by the Franciscan Minors. Today it is ruled by the Curia of Casale, owner of Sacro Monte. The building was enlarged in 1483 at the wish of the Marquis of Monferrato, Guglielmo Paleologo, then again between 1608 and 1612 by the Lateranensi. The present external appearance dates back to the 18th century. The interior features artistic and architectural works dating back to the 15th century.
