Pir Hasan is a Shiite sanctuary / mosque just north of Baku; the site has a reputation for faith healing or çıldağ in Azeri / Farsi. The idea is to imbue the "patient" who is suffering from some sort of phobia with a shock that would (?) instantaneously cure him or her. The reputation is strong and a steady flow of people come to be "treated". Two methods are proposed. The first consists of having a glass broken on the back of one's head - actually no; in reality, the bottle is smashed against a wall behind the "patient" - the pile of broken glass is testimony to the number of Azeris who've come to be "brained". Oddly, for a Muslim country, many of the bottles are beer bottles. The other method, consists of having a smouldering ember or bit of cloth applied (but not touching) to the skin at a number of key points on the body, very similar it seems to acupuncture. It is not painful at all, before taking the photos, I lent myself to both types of treatment and now I fear nothing and no one...
