On a recent visit to my daughter house in London I arrived at the same time as a scaffolding gang, there to erect scaffolding at the house. I watched fascinated at the skills demonstrated by Scott, Craig and Max. Physical fitness, strength and balance barely begins to describe what is required to engage in such an occupation. Needless to say a head for heights and an ability to work confidently at height is essential as is a thorough knowledge of health and safety. Lifting and carrying technique was as important as strength I was told. Being able to carry heavy scaffold poles up to 20feet in length through the confined space of a terrace house safely takes some doing. Hand eye co-ordination was also in evidence as equipment was passed from one level to the next. It is also an occupation in which teamwork seems paramount in getting the job done safely and effectively. I have no doubt the skill set of a scaffolder goes way beyond what I gleaned in the time I spent watching and chatting to them. I am now trying to organise another visit to watch them take it all down. A lot quicker job I am told.
