A U.S. Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 466, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, prepares to land on the flight deck of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Izumo-class multi-functional destroyer JS Kaga (DDH-184) off the coast of Southern California, Nov. 6, 2024. Maj. Gen. James B. Wellons, the commanding general of 3rd MAW, visited the JS Kaga alongside U.S. 3rd Fleet and JMSDF Fleet Escort Force senior leaders. Members of the F-35 Patuxent River Integrated Test Force, U.S. Sailors and Marines, and the crew of the JS Kaga executed developmental sea trials off the coast of Southern California, Oct. 5 to Nov. 18, 2024, to gather the necessary data to certify F-35B Lightning II short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft operations. The testing resulted in successful operation of the F-35B from the flight deck of the JS Kaga, strengthening the interoperability between U.S. and Japanese forces. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt.
