A crested macaque (Macaca nigra) lies on the ground, as it is being groomed by another individual in Tangkoko forest, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. A recent report by a team of scientists led by Marine Joly revealed that temperature is increasing in Tangkoko forest, and the overall fruit abundance decreased. "Between 2012 and 2020, temperatures increased by up to 0.2 degree Celsius per year in the forest, and the overall fruit abundance decreased by 1 percent per year, ” they wrote on International Journal of Primatology. "In a warmer future, they (primates) would have to adjust, resting and staying in the shade during the hottest times of the day. This could mean foraging less or not mating, which could limit overall food intake and change reproductive cycles, " scientist Brogan M. Stewart added in his report on The Conversation. Climate change and disease are emerging threats to primates, and approximately one-quarter of primates’ ranges have temperatures over historical ones, another team of scientists led by Miriam Plaza Pinto wrote on Nature.
