Orangutan, climate risk, habitat loss, and Indonesia's progress in reducing deforestation A 2021 scientific assessment focusing on climate risk published by The World Bank Group and Asian Development Bank has predicted that by 2080, over 30 percent of the suitable habitat for 11-36 percent of mammal species in Kalimantan could loss as a result of climate change. Habitat loss would likely drive to significant population declines. Orangutan itself has already been suffering from habitat loss due to land conversion. According to the report, an estimated 6 million hectares of primary forest cover was lost in Indonesia between 2000 and 2012. "Studies in different settings show primary forest degradation and conversion (often into palm oil plantations) resulting in declines in species richness up to or above 50 percent, " the report said. However, another study by World Resources Institute (WRI) showed that Indonesia has been showcasing a fourth straight year of declines in its deforestation trend. The fall was down to government policies including a moratorium on clearing primary forest and a freeze on permits for oil palm plantations, improvements in law enforcements and land rights, and use of technologies to tackle forest fires, said Arief Widjaya, forests senior manager at WRI Indonesia, as quoted by Reuters in late March 2021.
