Arundel International Joust Tournament is held annually in July. Contestants from all over the world come to take part in a historical re-enactment of equestrian skills practised by mediaeval knights. It is a week long festival of pageantry and spectacle for visitors to the castle. They wear authentic reproductions of the traditional armour worn by those knights. Living in an encampment in the grounds of the castle where there are also practitioners of the various crafts - including blacksmithing, calligraphy, apothecary, leather workers, bow makers and others - the knights do daily practice in the tilt yard of skill at arms then meet in the lists. A fence divides the two contestants as they approach from either end on their horses, lances raised. The aim is to hit their opponent with the lance, and they are scored on whether they manage to make contact as well as where they hit. The lances are tipped by a coronel, this is attached to a portion of the lance that is balsa wood and disintegrates easily on contact to avoid any serious damage to horse or rider. It is an exciting spectacle to watch as the horses charge down the list and the contact is made, with bits of shattered lance flying through the air. The skill with which the contestants manage their mounts also accrues points. Visitors can watch the events, meet the knights and their horses and get some idea of what it was like to live in medieval times.
