Over the last few weeks, I spent time documenting Afrowemaís journey towards Just Fashion Day at the Eco Fashion Week Kenya event that took place in November 23, 2023. Afrowema (an ethical and sustainable fashion social brand born in Kibera, Kenya the largest slum in Africa, Afrowema contributes to the empowerment of artisans in this community and creates new employment opportunities using new and used local materials) was founded by Tatiana. Just before the event, Tatiana accompanied by Idah Odeka, a model and environmental activist spent days working with a team of Seven young upcoming models from different parts of Nairobi teaching them both dancing skills and runway walks. Tatiana who works with local tailors from Kibera Slum took part in creating the different modeling outfits for the Afrowema Models that were used on the Just Fashion Day at the Eco Fashion Week Kenya. Afrowema In collaboration with Seeds & Stories ( a non-profit women-led social enterprise based in Bigodi Uganda uses fashion as a tool for women empowerment and environmental regeneration with a mission to empower rural women through regenerative fashion (soil to soil products) and capacity-building programs) unveiled different fashion attires created from recycled denim and shoe collections exclusively for this momentous event. Just Fashion is an initiative and platform for sustainable fashion, dedicated to promoting eco-conscious practices and a just, green, and sustainable transition in the fashion industry, a captivating event that forms part of Eco Fashion Week Kenya a transformative experience conceived by the visionary Belinda Smetana, founder of Sustainable Fashion and Travel.
