A Confederate memorial to “The South’s Lost Cause” is pictured at Shiloh National Military Park, Sept. 21, 2016, in Shiloh, Tennessee. At left, a Confederate soldier shows frustration as an officer bows his head in defeat. On the far right, an infantryman holds a Confederate flag as an artilleryman looks through the smoke of battle. In the center, the Confederacy surrenders her laurel wreath of victory to Death and Night. The park commemorates the Battle of Shiloh, which was one of the first major battles of the American Civil War and resulted in nearly 24, 000 men killed, missing, or wounded. The park, established in 1894, encompasses nearly 4, 000 acres and is managed by the National Park Service. The site is a national historic landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
