An adult female individual of Sulawesi black-crested macaque (Macaca nigra) is taking care an offspring during a weaning period in Tangkoko Nature Reserve, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The interactions between ecological and social factors have a significant effect on the survival of crested macaque offsprings, according to a research paper by scientists at Macaca Nigra Project. One of the main social factors is the number of females in the group. "Crested macaque groups with more adult females are better able to defend resources against other groups, " they wrote. Meanwhile, one of the main ecological factors is climate change. "The climate change in every season influences the availability and distribution of foods that will change the primate's daily ranges and activities. These changes include food composition, feeding intensity, and range of foraging movement, " wrote another team of scientists.
