The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) is cooperating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to respond to recent reports of a novel (new) coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, some causing respiratory illness in people and others that circulate mostly among animals. Common symptoms in an infected person include fever, cough and shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. Since its discovery in December 2019, mainland Chinese authorities have identified thousands of human infections, resulting in thousands of deaths associated with this novel (new) coronavirus, which began in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. In addition, novel coronavirus infections have been confirmed in numerous travelers in the United States and a growing list of countries internationally. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has confirmed 292 total cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Los Angeles County, including cases reported by Long Beach and Pasadena Health Departments.
