A woman walks through Staten Island. Staten Island is an island in the Atlantic Ocean belonging to the State of New York (USA) . It is one of five boroughs or metropolitan boroughs of New York. Its territory is coextensive with Richmond County . Until 1975 , the County and the District had the same name ( Richmond ) , when the City Council decided to rename the borough of Staten Island , the original name that was known by the Dutch who colonized . The name originated with Dutch, who called it " Staaten Eylandt ' in honor of the government of the Netherlands . Staten Island is separated from Long Island to the east by the Strait called The Narrows (which in turn connects the upper and lower parts of the Bay of New York) and north and west of the continent (New Jersey) by Arthur rivers or canals Kill and Kill Van Kull . To the south it is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. It is connected to New Jersey by three bridges and Brooklyn (and the rest of Long Island ) via the Verrazano Narrows Bridge . The Staten Island Ferry connects the island to the south of Manhattan , across the Upper Bay of New York, and has become a popular tourist attraction since it offers good views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island lower Manhattan.
