A panorama of the Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz who died in childbirth. It is reflected in the watercourse which forms part of the classical Mughal charbagh gardens whose paths lead from the red sandstone gateway to the Taj. The building backs backs onto the Yamuna River. The main architect was Isa Khan from Iran and the building was completed in 1653. The Taj stands on a raised marble platform, a minaret at each corner. The central structure has four small domes surrounding the central large dome. The tombs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan are in the basement. Semiprecious stones are inlaid into the marble using a process known as pietra dura.
