Adonis, famous for his beauty, is the son of the incestuous union of Myrrha and her father, the King of Paphos. Ovid, in Metamorphoses, recounts the tragic love of Venus and the young man, who perishes during a boar hunt. Canova emphasizes here the tenderness that unites lovers. He began this marble in July 1789. As soon as it was completed in 1794, it was bought by Francesco Berio, Marquis de Salza, who had a small temple built to house it in the garden of his Neapolitan palace. Acquired in 1820 by the Genevan Guillaume Favre, the work then passed through the sculptor's studio in Rome, because the master wanted to repolish this work from his first period and resume the drapery. Beyond the exceptional quality of its execution, the study of ancient models associated with the imitation of nature elevates this sculpture to the rank of a masterpiece and immediately captivated Geneva critics.
