View E from Brushfield Street of Christ Church, Spitalfields, London E1, England, UK, built using Portland stone 1714-29 by Nicholas Hawksmoor. The western portico features four massive Tuscan columns topped by a barrel-vaulted, semicircular arch. There is a similar arch in the belfry facade supporting the spire. The spire was renewed after a fire in 1836 but the architect, Ewan Christian, left off Hawksmoor's decorative bosses & urns. The church was saved from demolition in 1960 by the formation of the Hawksmoor Committee & the Friends of Christ Church Spitalfields. The church re-opened in 2004 after a "full and expert restoration". During the 1980s the remains of a thousand people were excavated from the crypt. The red-brick Queen Anne houses were originally occupied by Huguenot silk-workers. The church & surrounding area have had a facelift since my photograph was taken on 25 March 1987 after a market had been held in Brushfield Street. Old Spitalfields Market is to the L (N) of Brushfield Street.
