View NE of All Saints Church standing within the earthworks of Castle Camps motte & bailey castle, Cambridgeshire, England, UK. The site of the original motte, now occupied by the Castle Farm complex, is rear R, part of the outer bailey moat (rampart, banks & ditch) is visible front R. The mainly C15th church may have C13th or earlier origins. The W tower was rebuilt in 1851 after it had collapsed in 1850. Shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066 (c 1068) William I gave the Saxon manor to Aubrey de Vere who built a wooden ring keep on top of a large circular motte within a small, horseshoe-shaped bailey. Between 1265-1331 the large outer bailey (8 acres) was constructed. The church stands on the line of the original bailey bank & ditch. A substantial manor house stood on the motte until the C18th when it was replaced by the present farm. NE of the church is the site of a deserted medieval village.
