View S of St Decuman's Well, Watchet, Somerset, England, UK: water flows from the well house into D-shaped basins connected by stone channels. The well house is circular, built of random stone rubble with a flat slab for the roof. A C19th reconstruction of a late Medieval well associated with a C6th Romano-British hermit who came to Somerset as a missionary from Pembrokeshire. He was beheaded by an assassin while at prayer. His body carried his head to the well, washed it, replaced it & carried on with his missionary work. It is likely that the ancient well was a Pagan sacred site before conversion by Decuman. Since this photo was taken in September 1995, the area has been renovated by a joint team of Christains & Pagans & a garden of contemplation created for all. Around 1100, the water of the Fountain of St Decumans was described as sweet, healthful and necessary to the inhabitants for drinking purposes. The well is situated on a steep hillside NW of the Parish Church.
