The Isle of Portland is a limestone tied island, around 4 miles (6 km) long by 1.7 miles (2.7 km) wide, situated in the English Channel. Portland is 5 miles (8 km) south of the beachside resort of Weymouth, and is the southernmost point of the county of Dorset, England. Portland s a central part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms. Portland Harbour, in between Portland and Weymouth, is one of the largest man-made harbours in the world. The harbour was made by the building of stone breakwaters between 1848 and 1905 and is now a civilian port and popular recreation area. It was used for the 2012 Olympic Games.
