The Sant Ocean Hall, located in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, is the institution's largest exhibit, offering visitors a comprehensive introduction to the world's oceans. Opened in 2008, this 23, 000-square-foot space combines 674 marine specimens and models with high-definition video and cutting-edge technology to explore the ocean's past, present, and future. A centerpiece of the hall is a precise replica of Phoenix, a 45-foot-long North Atlantic Right Whale that scientists have tracked since her birth in 1987. Nearby, a model of a giant squid captures visitors' attention, representing a creature so elusive that a living specimen was not filmed until 2004. The exhibit's immersive atmosphere is enhanced by "Ocean Odyssey, " a high-definition film by renowned underwater cinematographer Feodor Pitcairn, which wraps around the walls above the exhibit space. This visual journey takes visitors from the sunlit surface to the darkest depths of the ocean, showcasing the diversity of marine life and environments. Interactive elements include the "Science on a Sphere" exhibit, created by NOAA, which uses data visualization to demonstrate ocean currents, climate patterns, and the interconnectedness of Earth's systems. The hall also features rotating exhibits on topics such as marine photography, bioluminescence, and coral reef ecosystems. The Sant Ocean Hall, named after philanthropists Victoria and Roger Sant, was created in partnership with NOAA to emphasize the ocean as a global system essential to all life on Earth. It serves not only as a showcase for the Smithsonian's unparalleled marine collection but also as an educational tool to promote ocean literacy and conservation awareness among its millions of annual visitors.
