Cigarette card with portrait of radio and film star Will Hay that form part of an old set from W D and H O Wills, Nottingham, part of Imperial Tobacco. William Thomson ‘Will’ Hay (1888 –1949) was born William Thomson Hay in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, England. He was a comedian, actor and film director. He became was popular in the 1920s, with his famous schoolmaster character in ‘The fourth form at St. Michaels’ sketches. Hay worked at Elstree Studios, Gainsborough Pictures, and Ealing Studios in films such as The Ghost of St. Michael's (1941), The Goose Steps Out (1942) and Oh, Mr Porter! (1937), probably his best-known film. The 1934 set is entitled: Radio Celebrities. These sets of cards were given away singly in packets of cigarettes and were (and are still) popular collector's items - a vintage 1930s graphics for editorial use only.
