Caption: Axu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2003. A nomadic Khampa child sleeps at a gompa in Axu. More than 100 kilometers from the nearest road, with no government healthcare or even telephone, Axu is remote. Serving approximately 20, 000 people, its local clinic, run by the monastery and using both Western and Tibetan medecines, is sparse, with only one room and one needle for every 60 people. Infant mortality for the nomads of Kham is high. Bitter winters see the temperature plummet below - 40 degrees Celsius. Births are made at home, in the tent, and umbilical cords are cut with rusty knives used to slaughter yaks.
