Caption: Axu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2003. A nomadic khampa man, his hat off in respect, walks before a Buddhist thanka (painting) during the festival of Guru Rimpoche's birthday, at a small monastery in Axu, the former tibetan Kingdom of Kham. Guru Rimpoche founded the Nyingmapa school of thought, and is responsible for bringing Buddhism to Tibet. Guru Rimpoche's birthday is one of the biggest festivals for the monastery, made especially important with the arrival of the Rimpoche, an exile who lives in India. Approximately a hundred kilometers off the nearest road with no telephone and one jeep, Axu (20, 000 people) is remote. Its population soley surviving off herding, with the monastery at the head of all social orders. "My monks have a pure heart" says the Rimpoche, a man who has spent almost his entire life as an exile in India. "They know the outside world and have no need for what is in it". Perhaps a romantic vision for now, although "change" is everywhere- including the cheap synthetic dyed cloth used to frame the thanka.
