Caption: Axu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2003. A statue of warrior King Gesar in Azu province, the former Tibetan kingdom of Kham. King Gesar is the image the Khampas mould themselves on: a fearless yet moralistic man who traveled throughout the land of Kham, assiting the poor, curbing violence, taming evil spirits and saving the people. Rumours have it that the Chinese government will pour money into the area for tourism development. More than 100 kilometers off the nearest road and without a telephone or equiped medical clinic, Axu is remote, its population still largely living after a traditional nomadic lifestyle.
